And while I've been very creative (mostly jewelry or hair jewelry), I haven't taken any photos of my work. A shame, since I sold much of it to coworkers and now live in another state.

Yes, that's right. I've moved back to Arizona.

The move was... so... much... fun. Can't tell you. Nope, it was too much fun to share just now. And it's getting late, and I should sleep before having to head off to work.

Writing has taken a fun new turn with my best friend, and I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes. Experimenting with wiring stems on artificial flowers and wrapping said stems. Note to self: 22gage wire works better than 20gage... And while visiting the local JoAnn Fabric and Crafts store, had to remind myself to =not= buy supplies for a new set of experiments, namely, mask blanks. I saw some simply fabulous masks at the Renn Fair, and I really wanted to make some that would look even more fabulous, only I'm counting pennies to meet my bills this month and likely next; took a pay cut when I moved, darn it!

And while I was focusing hard on my cross-country move, i collected my first DD... for my rose tutorial! That darned thing now resides in more than 2,400 collections, and is my singular most popular work in my gallery. Over 2,400 favorites on it... and nearly 350 of those were from the day it made DD, of course. The number staggers me. I used to try and check out the complete galleries of everyone who faved it, but that's getting to be a lot harder to manage. I'm settling for trying to reply to all those (comparatively few) people who posted comments on it instead.

I did make new earrings in honor of St. Patty's Day, but I'm not yet set up for taking photos of anything. (shrugs) Maybe next week that will be green to go.

...I took "horrible" advantage of the free llama badges and handed them out to about 50 or so people. About half of the ones I gave out were the first ones received by the ones I gave them to! A handful had already collected enough llamas that they now had super llama logos instead (which takes ten; I actually gave someone the lucky ten to make it happen ONCE out of all the ones I gave out). As long as I can't have my own icon for the day and I could do something free... I thought, why not? Doesn't hurt anyone, shouldn't annoy anyone. So... will I find any llama badges on my page after I've slept? Who knows...?

I work as a checker at a local W*M. As such, So last night around 10pm I get a lady with her daughter with a fair-sized order. We chat a bit before I comment on her t-shirt which reads:

Careful, or I might put you in my next book.

Reading t-shirts can be amusing, and since my workplace isn't one of those ritzy, high-class places (grins), many people wear "attitude shirts" to shop with us. I asked if she was a writer, and she agreed. There's only one famous local author on MY reading lists, and I felt excitement building as I asked if she was Ms. Briggs... and she agreed that was her name! Smiling, I told her she could put me in her next book if she wanted to, even if she kills me. (I can't really see her needing an awesome checker in one of her stories, but... you never know!)

Now I'm practically bouncing up and down inside my head as I continue processing her order, admitting that I =LOVE= her work. That I'm eagerly waiting on her "Bonecrossed" to hit paperback, and I want a copy of her graphic novel both because she wrote it and because I love the style of the artist (Brett Booth, also on dA). Patricia tells me that "Bonecrossed" is now out in paperback, which delights me. She mentions this one character "Mac" whom she brought in pretty much to make us care for and like so she could kill him. I admitted that made me cry, but since it served a purpose, I could deal with it. She seemed relieved to hear =someone= felt this way, and we moved on to the work of other authors we both like.

Her daughter comments that her mother has 150 BOXES of books in the garage, which makes me drool, and I admit I've had to half my collection numerous times due to moving... after both mention I could sell some. I have a hard, hard time selling or giving away books, as I tend to re-read them a lot and don't like having to chase down another copy of something I've already bought once.

Right before her order is finished, I start one of my favorite customer stories about a couple who happens to be black that came through my line, where the man tried to get me to give him my employee discount (something I could be fired for, btw). After the fourth time he said "it's cause I'm black!" I realize he's not going to drop it, and I look at him. Then I squint at him, like it's really hard to see him. Frowning, I reply, "You're black?" (I turn my head away) "Dang, I need to get my prescription fixed!" They both bust out laughing, and the man comments that "no one ever has a comeback for that, they're all worried about being seen as racist." Personally, I'm not worried about being seen as racist. While I've noticed that some things tend to be true for people of this or that race (like Mexican migrant workers almost ALWAYS pay me in $50 and $100 bills), I don't expect all people of that race to be the same.

Smiling, Patricia walks away. I didn't ask her to sign anything, but then I didn't have anything on me that I'd want her to sign, and it seems rather demanding to ask someone famous for that just because you crossed their path while they were out taking care of family business. Actually, I didn't even think about asking her to sign anything until much later. But I have the weekend off for Radcon this year, a local con she always goes to, and =maybe= I'll get her to sign my books there. It would be so cool to see her at "her" workplace...

I just looked at my last non-scrap upload... and it was posted a year and 5 months ago. I've done a lot of work since then, but it's all been jewelry or very basic knitting projects (blankets and scarves). Need to take a lot of pictures and do some updating. I'm just not very happy with my photos for the most part. The lighting, mostly. We'll see.

(frowns) And the mood icons aren't loading for me so I can change them, so... ignore the "uneasy" one, as it means nothing. Think more... "bemused" instead that I've gone so long without posting new work, yet have made so many necklaces and earrings, and a few hairsticks as well.

Etsy help?

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 20, 2008, 2:46 AM
I really need help choosing an Etsy shop name. If anyone has some ideas, I'd be thrilled to read them!

.

So... Friday I start work rather late in the day, and on my way in, a manager stops me and asks if I'd like to transfer to another department where I'd get more pay, and training to make me more marketable in time. Sounds good, I say "Sure!" Openings there don't come up often, and who wouldn't want to make more money? I have him walk me through which options I have to select to make this happen.

I talk to the guy whose in charge of the area, and he's thrilled by my interest, and wants me in his area ASAP. The first manager apparently sang my praises to him, and he wants me to start by the end of this week. Sounds good... until he opens the requisition and I'm not listed. I'm rather surprised by this, being that I had help making sure I'd sign up for the right things. Uh... no. I'm not. So I go back and find all the other possible openings, and for good measure check the pay grade for them.

The same as what I'm currently at.

The real kicker? I'm thinking that since they are talking so much with each other, they've told my current boss that they want me. NOPE! I dropped that bomb on her today. She wasn't thrilled, either. Didn't sound as if she'd block me from going, but not a happy camper.

Antimalware virus warning

Andrew stopped by Friday night. He was actually in the neighborhood, and since he lives on the other side of the mountains... (grins) He reformatted my computer, so I'll be starting from scratch on adding programs and such. Thank you so very much, Andrew!

For those of you who heard, the Antimalware virus shut me down. If you get it, kick its butt BEFORE trying to uninstall that bastard, or you lose the ability to surf.

The Horror of WalMart

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 10, 2008, 2:54 AM
This entry inspired by MidnightExigent's latest journal.

WalMart is a corporation, and like EVERY OTHER CORPORATION, it's looking out for itself. Most people won't fight when screwed over, they will drift away and hope to find something better elsewhere. People ask me all the time how I like working for WalMart, and I tell them I enjoy being a cashier... because I =do= enjoy being a cashier. When they press, I tell them the truth: WM is like every other corporation I've ever worked for.

I'm full time with them right now. My availability is open from 10am-12am, I'm dependable and reliable as far as showing up, knowing what I need to, being able to do the work... and let's be honest. Not many others will pay a cashier a decent wage. It's still not a "living wage" as so many point out. For 2007, I earned less than $17,000, had no dependents, finished the year with money in the bank (although not much) and was up for money back on my tax return. I've gotten used to living on "next to nothing" and still having a decent standard of living. I'm not living in a slum. The neighborhood is nice. I don't eat out a lot, but do some of the time. They best show their appreciation of me by continuing to give me very close to 40 hours every week and otherwise leaving me alone to do my work.

My customers love me.

No, I'm not boasting. Seriously, until I came to work at this store, I didn't know that cashiers could have =fans=. I have people who go out of their way to have me check them out. Even if I have a line and another cashier is bored and trying to take care of them, they will wait in my line for service, knowing they will get fast, friendly, cheerful service, not end up with Draino in with the bananas or bread, and soft items not set up with heavy things so they can be squished. Unless a customer says they need light bags, I fill them up and do NOT need to be told to double bag anything that's heavy, has sharp edges (as more and more packaging does) or is glass/ceramic. Cold things are placed together and bags I fill can =usually= stand up on their own when taken off the spindle and set down... depending on what they are buying. None of this "three items the size of paperback books and the bag is full."

I love working with people. If I didn't, I'd have found something else to do with my life before now. So many people hate customer service jobs, and I can understand why: they bring a bad attitude to work with them, and that only encourages others to ensure that their day will suck hard. Because every time I fail to bring MY good attitude to work because I'm sick or some such (thankfully rare) cause, I get all the mean customers flying out of the woodwork. Trust me, I =do= understand why so many people hate working customer service.

A large part of why people hate customer service work is that no one ever bothers to tell them when they are doing well. Hell, that's across the board no matter where you're working or what you're doing, most of the time you only hear about your work when you've made a mistake, or it's time for your latest evaluation. (shrugs) Management forgets that one of the simplest, cheapest ways to improve moral is to tell people when they are doing well, to praise them regularly when they are doing well, and let them know early when they are falling short before it's a serious problem</b>.

I've had jobs where I only heard bad about my work, and I hated working there. Places where they leave me alone to work have generally been the ones I've enjoyed the most, not because the pay is great, but because I'm not hearing how bad things are all the time. I was a manager myself for 7 years, and I always made sure to tell people when they were doing well, when they weren't, and helped them get to where they were getting things done at the level and quality that was expected or better. The new managers in training often told the supervisors who were thinking of putting in for management to ask for me train them in my area, because I'd take the pressure off of learning, teach them well, and wouldn't cut them off from future help the moment their training period was over. They knew I'd help them without making them feel like fools. I helped many people learn how to do a job few liked, and do it well. They didn't magically learn to like the job, but they could do it at need.

1776!

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 5, 2008, 12:05 AM
I worked for the 4th of July, even though it was supposed to be my second day off this week. They were short handed, and I agreed to come in for a full day's work.

As a cashier, I find the totals that come up now and again to be utterly fascinating. Today I had a fellow come through whose total was... $17.76. (grins) I was quite amused, and thought I'd share.

My competitors in the clay contest discovered!

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 26, 2008, 3:09 AM

One of the names on the list didn't have any sea life sort of clay work, and another didn't state clearly that the only images in their gallery are for the contest, but... otherwise, I think these are all the other entries:

The competitors for the polymer clay contest!

Leafy by kaasha A leafy seahorse in very bright colors... I love these colors...
Anemone in the Dark by NycterisA The fabulous sea anemone that glows in the dark or can be lit from within by an electric tea light.
My reef by fogllama Coral... all of that creation is various types of coral. I'm amazed by it.
Necturus Maculosus by Bystillwaters Mudpuppy... can't say as I've ever seen one before, but it looks good to me.
Octopus Attack by hell0z0mbie A pink octopus!
Blackfish by keylord A black fish... never heard of it, but hey. World's full of things I've never heard of before.
Clay Axolotl by theperfectlestat A little albino axolotl.
:thumb82276095: Seahorse brooch, with an additional background that can be added on. Very creative!
Frodo the Octopus by Tadadada Frodo the Octopus, after a certain Ring bearer...
Geoducks - Catharsis Contest by kitsa-kat Geoducks - aka Gooey Ducks.
Squids Are Not As Awesome by dev-chieftain A collage of sea life.
Cephalopod Bracelet by Darmael Cephalopod bracelet.
Jellyfish by MdngtRain Jellyfish!
Nudibranch by CharOS This is another one of those "what the heck is a nudibranch?" moments for me. Very interesting to look at, I'll say.
stream sculpture by Rahonzo (is stunned) Don't just skip over this collage thumbnail, this one is VERY much worth a full view. Very detailed and intricate.
CatharsisJB Contest: Final by EarthBerry A blue ringed octopus, which is the size of a golf ball, carries enough poison to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. I suggest you don't get bit.
Rare Squid-Hatted Otter by The-Dragon-Girl (sniffles!) Someone else did an otter too, and theirs was cooler than mine.
:thumb83194691: Hey! We found Nemo!
Curmudgeonly Sturgeon by dragophethis The Curmudgeonly Sturgeon.
jellyfish ornament by Shadayim A super nifty photo collage of a glow in the dark jellyfish!
Red clay angler fish by MidnightJackel Angler fish
Vampire Squid from Hell by Goagleon Vampire Squid
The Octopi by MsMaryMak Octopi
Opabinia regalis by OtaniFumetsu Opabinia Regalis
Set by freida-stone Not sure if this is the entry, but since it's about all she has up... It's a braclet, with sea life charms.
Axel the Axolotl by Lluhnij An albino axolotl.
Polymer Clay Eel Collage by L3Loup And a blue eel.
Orca Clay Sculpture by hawkfangor Orca! Love the painting on this, and the glossy look suits it, I'd say.
Mr. Lobster by Karnanyd Mr. Lobster on the half-shell!
:thumb83450920: Spiked Puffer fish makin' faces at you!
Stingray How-To by EmeraldWolf77 Stingray
Final Project, 'Kraker' by Laycaris Octopus chopstick holder
Sculpture Contest- Mudpuppy by Zahzumafoo Mudpuppy, in the colors of one that has traits of Progenesis. Progenesis is fairly common in Mudpuppies: Simply put, it's when they reach maturity but their body doesn't change out of it's larval appearance.
Octopus pendant by jamie-lee Octopus pendant.
Octopus

Some of these just... blow my mind right out of the water, so to speak (pun noted and intended). As you can guess, I'm in no danger of winning, as I suspected! Nor, no matter how well crafted some of them are, would be the octopi entries, if I understand the rules; at least 10 people chose different octopi to enter. Anything that was an over-popular choice isn't up for winning. Two of us made each of the following: angler fish, otters, axolotl, sea horses, jellyfish and mudpuppies. (grins)

For finalists, I'd peg

They are in my opinion some of the best and most unique of the entries I've seen.

.

This is my first finished sculpture in about 21 years. The last time I worked in polymer clay I meant to make into Christmas gifts. With some bright green clay, I shaped a serpent with its head raised above the coil of its body, and embedded iridescent sequins down its back. The result was... disappointing. So much so that I didn't try any of the other projects I had in mind for the clay I'd bought. Couldn't think of how to make more complex figures without having them slump.

Last few years I've watched a few crafty spots and seen ideas for how to solve some of the issues I'd had in the past with clay. One of the first tutorials for Sculpey was CatharsisJB's one on how to make those cute little critters she's always making. They are very cute, but still weren't quite what I was looking for to solve the sort of design issues I craved getting around. After about a year here, I found RennardX and SovaeArt who have both done a couple of in-depth "how to" build sculptures with wire and clay.

So I've been itching to do something with clay for some time now, but it took CatharsisJB's contest to spur me on. This isn't the best I can do. This is only the best I've done. The next one will be better. Certainly this one is worlds better than my last effort, which I no longer have, so can't show anyone how very much I've improved. (smiles) Too bad... I might found good use for that "most improved" prize that I don't qualify for... (grins, blushes) You had to have a pic posted of your other attempts before the start of the contest, and I've lost that crappy snake a LONG time ago.

Contrast and Contrary together by lovelauraland
My Little Pony... without pink! Love the contrast between these two in the pic, and I have to really like a b/w work to fav it. High school burned me out on that combination, because it took no imagination to put black and white garments together and be "fashonably dressed" for the day. The eyes are rather different from how most others I've seen do them, and the swirled horns are a lovely touch as well.

never say duck to a swan by bryan-cuttance
(smiles) A cute little bit of story to go with the pic, but one of my favorite parts of this is the reflection of blue sky and where it seems to instantly turn crystal clear and reveal the sandy bottom.

Make mine chilled, and with so much milk and sugar that it's only a coffee-FLAVORED drink!

Alpha Female Hunting Dog by kaasha
Wonderful sculptures, some small, some larger. Dogs are the best, although my heart warms most swiftly to felines.

And I'm Solid... by Catboy-Trades
Sara the ghost girl needs a shoulder to cry on because of... WHAT?!?

Burrito's Screenshot Tutorial by CatharsisJB
While I already know how to do a screen shot, but this is recommended reading for all. Who can resist a sarcastic gecko telling you all you need to know about doing this?

Femme Fatale by KaceyM
Two b/w images this time... There are so many details about this that I love: the cut crystal decanter, the glass of scotch, the many butts in the ashtray, the way they've done her shoes, the texture of the wood floor, carpet and chair...

Something for each of us to keep in mind.

Bamboo Tale by hinnie Bamboo Forrest by FishiexFishie
These two bamboo pics found via y2jenn's feature on bamboo, a plant I find to be quite interesting, and hard to find good reference photos of so I can better learn how the stuff looks in a natural setting, not the stuff that gets pinned and bound into "fun" shapes, which is ALSO cool... but not what I'm interested in artistically. Yeah, most of that is a comment on the latter one, the actual photo. The other is just beautiful...

:thumb58200634::thumb82100097:
I like the thoughts behind both of these. Yeah, I like comments, often more than favs, but both are a compliment because they tell me that you cared enough to leave one, the other or both. And one gets tired of people taking the net too seriously. (smiles)

:thumb82162832:
(sighs wistfully) Lovely green jewelery is a favorite of mine. Could only be made more lovely in my eyes if the metal was copper-hued, which would offset the green to a treat. But... that's not a common metal used in the USA for such jewelery, likely because it tarnishes so quickly, and changes to something less bright and shiny. It CAN, however, have more character to a piece. I had a two-headed hand-cast "coin" made at a Renn Fair in AZ that I wore nearly every day for two years, and it looked better to me after two years of wear than when it was newly cast and shiny. The tarnish was mostly a blue-green, and made the images stick out more.

The Boy and His Drawing by BanditRingtail3
I'm sure a lot of us have felt this way now and again. And it does suck hard when no one seems to notice or care if your work is improving.

Spirit Caller Dragon by Nambroth
Beautiful work which you will need to follow the links in the artist's comments to get a better grasp of, since metallic paints were used and as anyone who's ever tried scanning metallic paints can tell you... they scan like crap. At least THIS time the flat scan doesn't destroy the beauty of the pic, only dulls it a bit.

...no clue how they managed to find such a lovely shot to capture, but they did! Lacy, icy day!

2 weeks' favorites

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 5, 2008, 1:19 AM
And a fun video link for those who are SOOO thrilled with MySpace: www.youtube.com/watch?v=avxpn_…

Somewhere in MySpace, there is a page used only once that I created. Heck, if you find it, let me know. I've never been back to it.

It's been at least two weeks since I've gone through my deviations inbox, and I was up to 711 to look at. No, didn't leave a lot of comments, but... I did leave a number of :+fav:s around. 46, to be exact. Hey, had to also post a new journal to go with the new CSS I put together a few days back!

Yes, there are a fair number of butterfly photos in this mix. I'm trying to learn more types than the standard Monarch butterflies that comprise so many of the colorful butterflies that I can name on the spot. Heck, some moths are colorful, but I don't know any of their names, either.

Planning to have a new work completed later today (Wednesday) if possible, which it =should= be, as I have the day off and it's close to completion. My first comic to share online. Be gentle with me...

Link collection journal.

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 9, 2008, 11:46 PM
Ever read a journal and thought, "Darn it, there's no bloody way to fav this, and I really, really WANT TO!"

Yeah, me too. So I'm collecting a few of my favorites to share, either the journal or the link from the journal, with credit to whomever posted it.

And a fun video link for those who are SOOO thrilled with MySpace: www.youtube.com/watch?v=avxpn_… posted by CatharsisJB. Mind, it is a music video, so careful about clicking it at work.

Trying out a few mods to the CSS coding that trashydragon designed, and using my own image and colors. Whatcha think, holiday-themed enough? (grins)

1-1-08... welcome!

Happy New Year!

@}-- ~~~~~~~ --{@

Things to be thankful for:

friends
family
creativity
having a job
my own place to live
freedom to come and go as I please

It may not seem like a lot to others, but these things are just some of those things that mean a lot to me, and I'm grateful to have them.

:icontrashydragon: is the one who designed this CSS layout. Very simple and easy to use, as a cut and paste sort of thing. Tried using it yesterday and it didn't work... because I pasted the code in the wrong area. Darned if it doesn't work so much better when dropped in the correct spot...! And much nicer than the standard gray, which gets old fast. Something new to go with the new year!
